Logo is a symbol that is used as a tool of recognition. It is used for public recognition and business promotion. Logos are designed with the philosophy of the brand or product in the background.
Logo designing has come a long way since the days of the Gutenberg press. From being blocks of letters to using the most fluid and curvy designs, we have seen a 180 degree transition in logo designing
Since logos are construed as the flag bearers of the company’s identity and reputation amidst the heavy competition in the industry, companies these days invest a lot of time and energy in designing an appropriate logo to win that battle. Also, since most of these logos go on to become the registered trademarks of the company, much thought is to be given in adopting a logo.
Why does a company or business need a logo? Can’t they exist and run without a logo? Sure they can! But, logos provide more authenticity and credibility to the business. Credible businesses go a long way in winning customer support and loyalty.
Some advantages of having a logo for the business are :
- Instant recognition. Logos are the face of the business in the public space. People recognize the brand using the logo and hence it adds value to the brand among the people.
- Lends credibility to the business. People are more likely to trust a business with a logo than a similar one without a logo. It conveys an image of seriousness to the people.
- Saves space. Using the logo to advertise instead of a long brand name saves space and thereby captures viewer’s attention for a longer time.
- It stays for a long, long time. Logos are perpetual. They are here to stay and slowly become an integral part of the lives of the customers.
Logo designing has become an actual art and a science. It involves strategy and aesthetics among others.
Some crucial points to follow while designing a logo are :
- Choose an appropriate colour for the logo. The colour of the logo goes a long way in establishing the core essence of the brand or product. For example- anything related to plants or vegetarianism goes better with a green based logo than any other colour.
- The logo must be clutter free. Go for minimalistic designs which are easy to zoom in and zoom out without pixelating. Opt for more of straight lines than loops and waves.
- Do not print a lot in the logo. It is not necessary for the logo to have the name of your brand in it. Days are gone where you needed the entire product name on the logo.
- Color scheme of the logo is equally important if you are opting for a multicoloured logo like Google.
- The logo must be designed in a way that it looks the same across social media platforms. For example, Facebook has a square profile picture slot while Twitter and Instagram have a circle display picture slot. Logos must be designed to cater to all of these without getting distorted or pixilated.
- Do not try to cram many details into the logo. It is completely fine to take some details out and keep it at the bare minimum.
- Choose the font that suits your brand or business line. Using Comic Sans font for something serious does not bode well for the logo.
- Take care that the logo must come out perfect in print also. Lines that are too close to each other or loops can cause smudging and ruin the look of the logo on paper.
Logos are intellectual properties and are protected globally under various legislations of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Since most logos go on to become trademarks of the businesses, there are strict laws governing them against misuse.
